What You Need to Know About Tarantulas

Coloring in these printable tarantula illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new facts about these creepy crawlies!

Here are fifteen things you may not know about tarantulas.

    1. Tarantula Town

Did you know there are over 800 species of tarantulas? These eight-legged wonders are found on almost every continent, from the steamy rainforests of South America to the dry deserts of Africa.

    2. Super-Sized Spiders

Some tarantulas are as big as a dinner plate! The biggest spider is the goliath bird-eating tarantula, with legs that are up to 11 inches across.

    3. Fuzzy Feeling

Tarantulas are famous for their thick, hairy bodies and legs. These hairs help tarantulas feel the world around them, detecting dinner or danger.

    4. Hairy Defense

Some tarantulas have a unique defense move involving stinging hairs, known as “urticating” hairs. If a tarantula feels threatened, it can send a cloud of these special hairs flying towards its enemy, causing itching.

    5. Living Legends

Female tarantulas can live up to 30 years, making them some of the longest-lived spiders on the planet. The males have a shorter lifespan, usually around 7 years.

    6. Home Sweet Burrow

Tarantulas are expert home builders, with many species living in underground burrows. These homes protect spiders from the weather and predators like lizards, hawks, and owls. Some of these arachnids even add silk web doorways, which let them know if there are any unwelcome visitors.

    7. The Predator's Diet

Tarantulas are carnivores, meaning they feast on meat. As well as insects, some of the larger species eat frogs, mice, and even small birds.

    8. Spider Skin

Tarantulas grow by molting, which is like shedding their outer skin (exoskeleton). This reveals a new, larger skin underneath. During this process, tarantulas can even regrow lost limbs.

    9. Slow and Stealthy

Despite their scary appearance, tarantulas are not known for being fast runners. They prefer to wait patiently and sneakily attack their prey.

    10. Venomous, but Not Deadly

Tarantulas do have venom, but it's not usually harmful to humans. A bite from a “T” might hurt, but it's usually no worse than a bee sting for most people.

    11. Creatures of the Night

Being nocturnal means tarantulas are most active at night. During the day, they like to stay hidden away in their burrows. This nighttime activity helps them avoid the heat of the day and hunt their prey under the cover of darkness.

    12. Dating Dance

When it's time to find a mate, male tarantulas perform a special dance to attract females. This dance can include a variety of moves, from tapping to vibrating their bodies. It's their way of saying, "Hey, look at me, I'm a great catch!"

    13. A Dangerous Love Life

The tarantula's mating ritual can be risky for the males. Sometimes, after mating, the female may decide to eat the male if she feels threatened or is just hungry.

    14. Spider Buddies for Children of All Ages

Tarantulas make great pets for little kids as well as older kids. You can house them in terrariums specifically designed for spiders. Their home must be kept warm, between 75 and 85 degrees. They’ll also need insects like crickets and mealworms to feast on.

    15. Eco-Warriors

Because they eat insects and pests, tarantulas play an important role in their ecosystems by helping to prevent overpopulation and the spread of diseases.

Learning about tarantulas shows us how unique and interesting these creatures are. If you know more cool facts about these amazing web-slingers, share them with us in the comments. You might even inspire new tarantula coloring pages!
