What You Need to Know About Chickens

Coloring in these printable chicken illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new facts about our feathered friends!

Here are 23 things you may not know about chickens.

    1. Early Morning Alarm

Male chickens, also known as roosters or cockerels, have special vocal cords that allow them to crow loudly. Roosters crow at dawn to show they're in charge and mark their area on the farm. Their loud call can be heard up to a mile away and is a natural alarm clock for anyone nearby.

    2. Eggs-cellent Layers

A healthy hen can lay between 250 to 300 eggs per year. They provide a steady supply of eggs for families and farms worldwide.

Nowadays, more people prefer free-range eggs, where chickens roam freely outdoors. This method leads to happier hens and higher-quality eggs.

    3. Bright and Bold

Roosters boast colorful feathers in shades of red, blue, gold, and everything in between. These vibrant colors and detailed patterns serve two purposes: attracting hens and scaring potential enemies.

    4. Chicken Life Cycle

A chicken starts life as an egg before hatching into a cute little chick covered in fluffy feathers. They then grow into chickens, with hens laying their own eggs and roosters protecting the flock.

    5. Garden Helpers

Chickens eat a varied diet of seeds, grains, insects, and small animals such as mice and frogs. These farm animals are also great at munching on pests that harm plants. Owning chickens is a natural way to keep your garden, flowers, and vegetables healthy.

    6. Chatty Chickens

Did you know baby chicks start talking before they even see the world? Yep, these little chickens make peeping sounds to each other and their mother hen while still in the egg. This communication allows them to time their hatching so they all come out together.

    7. Colorful World

Chickens can see detailed patterns and simple colorings better than humans. Their world is a rainbow of colors we can't even imagine. It helps them spot food and predators like foxes, raccoons, and large birds like hawks.

    8. Memory Masters

Roosters and hens have an excellent memory that helps them survive by remembering where to find food and which areas to avoid due to predators. Chickens can protect themselves and their chicks from threats by remembering safe paths and dangerous zones.

    9. The Tidbitting Dance

To attract hens, roosters perform a dance known as tidbitting. This dance routine involves picking up and dropping food while making unique sounds. The behavior demonstrates the rooster's ability to find food, which is appealing to hens.

    10. Keeping Clean

Instead of taking a shower, chickens prefer a dust bath. Rolling in dust helps them get rid of unwanted guests like mites and lice. It's like their spa day, keeping their feathers fabulous and healthy.

    11. Hierarchical Leaders

Roosters keep order in their flock by establishing a pecking order. They protect the hens and keep the flock safe and happy.

    12. Dreamy Sleepers

Chickens experience REM sleep, which means they dream just like we do. This special ability suggests chickens have big brains that help them learn and remember better.

    13. Defense Mechanism

Cockerels have sharp, pointed growths on their legs called spurs. They use these spurs for defense against predators and other roosters. These natural weapons are important for the cockerel's role as protector of the flock.

    14. Friendly Faces

Hens and roosters can remember over 100 different faces of their chicken friends and human buddies. Recognizing individuals helps chickens develop strong bonds with their flock and humans.

    15. Popular Poultry

In the poultry industry, chickens are the most popular type of poultry eaten worldwide. Each year, billions of chickens are sold around the world, showing just how important they are in our food supply.

    16. High Flyers

While chickens might not be the first animals that come to mind when you think of flying, they can take to the air for short distances. This skill helps them reach safe nesting spots and escape predators.

    17. Cool Combs

The red thing on a chicken's head, called a comb, isn't just for show. It helps the birds stay cool on hot days. Think of it as a chicken’s natural air conditioning system.

    18. Egg Security

Although roosters do not lay eggs, they protect hens and their eggs from threats. They alert mama hens to safe nesting spots and may stand guard, making sure the hen can lay and look after her eggs safely.

    19. Cultural Significance

Many cultures see roosters as brave and strong, such as in the Chinese zodiac. They represent the spirit of honesty, never giving up, and facing challenges head-on. People admire roosters for these qualities.

    20. Long Lives

Chickens can live up to 8 years or more with proper care. This long life allows them to form lasting bonds with their flock and human caretakers.

    21. Tail of Beauty

Some hens have puffy tails that are pretty and also show they're healthy. These vibrant tails help male chickens attract a hen for mating.

    22. Egg Color Clues

The color of a rooster's earlobes can sometimes give clues about the color of the eggs his hens will lay. This interesting link is due to genetics.

    23. Ancient Pals

Chickens have been hanging out with humans for a very long time. They were one of the first domestic animals around 7,000 to 10,000 years ago!

These chicken facts shine a light on the fascinating lives of these birds, from their dreamy sleep to their impressive memory. If you have more cool facts about these clucky companions, drop them in the comments. You might inspire a new chicken coloring page design!
