What You Need to Know About Eagles

Coloring in these printable eagle illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some interesting facts about this predatory bird!

Here are fifteen things you may not know about eagles.

    1. Largest Birds of Prey:

Eagles can spread their wings more than 2 meters (6.5 feet) and are one of the largest bird species. This wide wingspan enables them to glide on air currents without flapping too much, saving energy while scanning large areas for food.

    2. A National Symbol:

The bald eagle, with its striking white head, is the national bird of the United States. Chosen in 1782, the eagle represents the country's values of strength and freedom.

    3. Eagle Species:

There are over 60 species of eagles flying across the globe. While some species like Old World eagles hang out in Asia, bald eagles and the Harpy prefer North America. Each species displays a unique appearance and skill set.

    4. Super Sight:

Eagles have eyesight 4-8 times stronger than humans. This helps them to spot a tasty rabbit hopping from miles away.

    5. Brilliant Nest Builders:

Eagles build massive nests, called aeries, on top of tall trees or cliffs. These nests are made from sticks and branches, and can be as heavy as a car. They return to the same nest each year to raise their babies.

    6. Masters of the Sky:

When eagles fly, they can soar for hours. They can also dive at speeds up to 160 km/h (100 mph) thanks to their powerful wings, swooping down to catch their prey with perfect aim.

    7. Tight Talons:

With talons as strong as their beak, eagles can grasp fish, other birds, and small mammals like squirrels and mice. Their sharp talons mean they can hold on tightly to their catch while flying.

    8. Partners for Life:

Eagles are romantics at heart; they choose a mate and stick with them for life. To attract a partner, they perform stunning sky dances, showing off their flying skills and strength.

    9. Baby Eagles:

Born fluffy and gray, eaglets depend on their carnivore parents for food and protection. They grow quickly, learning to fly and hunt within months.

    10. Heavy Lifting:

Bald eagles can lift up to 4 pounds (1.8 kg) in their talons. This strength allows them to snatch fish from water or lift other animals, such as ducks or rabbits.

    11. Long-Lived Birds:

Eagles can live for up to 30 years in the wild. In captivity, some have been known to live nearly 50 years. This is thanks to mindful care and plenty of food.

    12. Top of the Food Chain:

As apex predators, eagles don't have to worry about any other animals hunting them once they're grown. They play an important role in keeping the balance of our ecosystems by controlling populations of other animals.

    13. Gizzard Gulp:

Eagles have a special part in their stomach called the gizzard, which helps break down their food. This filters out the bits they can't digest, like feathers and bones.

    14. Group Gathering:

While eagles are often seen soaring alone or with their mate, sometimes they gather in small groups. This can happen when there's lots of food in one area or during migration, where birds travel thousands of miles.

    15. Cartwheeling in the Sky:

Eagles have a daring move called "cartwheeling," where two birds lock talons in mid-air and spin toward the ground. Then, they let go at the last second! This risky trick is often a part of a dating dance or fighting over territory.

I hope these facts have taught you something new about the amazing life of eagles. If you have any more nuggets of knowledge about this fierce symbol of the United States, share them in the comments below. You might inspire a new eagle coloring page design!
